The Impact of Industry 4.0 on Engineering

Image

Industry 4.0 is often referred to as the fourth industrial revolution or 4IR. It is the intersection of manufacturing systems and processes with the emerging digital technologies of Internet of Things, Big Data, Immersive Realities and Artificial Intelligence.

The results in manufacturing systems and processes have been transformable:

1. Optimizing the design of machines: An example is Robots

2. Automated and remote monitoring and management of machines: Examples are digital twins, machine interaction and predictive maintenance.

3. Additive Manufacturing: Example 3D Printing

4. Smarter Power Grids: Examples are renewable power, nano and micro grids

5. Improved enterprise resource management. Examples are supply chain management and product distribution.

Industry 4.0 concepts and technologies can be applied across all types of industrial operations, including discrete, process and heavy manufacturing, as well as oil and gas, mining, agricultural, biomedical and other industrial segments.

As such, Industry 4.0 impacts almost every field of engineering. Most certainly Computer/Software, industrial, mechanical and electrical engineering. But also civil, chemical, bio/medical and environmental/agricultural engineering where a manufacturing process or system requires specialized consideration.

However, before an engineer can participate in an Industry 4.0 project they must first understand the fundamentals of IoT, Big Data, Immersive Realities and AI technology and how they are applied in their field of engineering.

At the Engineer eLearning Center we are building a catalogue of short, inexpensive courses on how these four emerging technologies are being applied in specific applications of engineering.
