The Future of Engineering Part III - Immersive Realities

Course Number: 003

Fee: Free

Length: 4 Hours

Credits: This course qualifies for 4 PDH (unstructured) and 4 CEU (structured) technical learning credits issued by most US State Engineering Regulatory Organizations and all Canadian Provincial and Territorial Engineering Regulatory Organizations.

Online, Self-Directed Format: Primarily Text with Illustrations and Video

Course Description (Syllabus):

Internet of Things and Big Data (Parts 1 and 2 of this series) have significantly enhanced the speed, quality, and scope of Immersive Realities.

This course is designed to provide an introductory understanding of the concepts, principles, devices, software, and applications of the three Immersive Realities: Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) and their impact on engineering.

We will delve into the fundamentals of VR, AR and MR, including their definitions, historical background, and basic principles. We will examine the evolution of VR, AR and MR technologies and how they have transformed the way engineers approach design, collaboration, prototyping, construction management, and other aspects of their work.

We will explore the various devices and software used in VR , AR and MR comparing their features and capabilities. This will provide participants with a solid understanding of the tools available for implementing VR, AR and MR applications in their engineering field.

Learning Outcomes: By completing this course you will learn:

  1. Definition and overview of Immersive Technology: Virtual (VR), Augmented (AR) and Mixed Realities (MR)
  2. The software and devices used in VR, AR, and MR technologies
  3. How to create Virtual Realities
  4. Applications of VR in different fields of engineering: Civil, Mechanical. Electrical, Chemical, Biomedical, Environmental, Agricultural
  5. How to create Augmented Realities
  6. Applications of AR in different fields of engineering: Civil, Mechanical. Electrical, Chemical, Biomedical, Environmental, Agricultural
  7. How to create Mixed Realities
  8. Applications of MR in different fields of engineering: Civil, Mechanical. Electrical, Chemical, Biomedical, Environmental, Agricultural
  9. Technical challenges and human factors in Immersive Realities
  10. The future of Immersive Realities

Who Should Take This Course:

Engineering students, engineers less familiar with Immersive Realities and engineers who wish to update their knowledge of this rapidly evolving technology and how it is applied in their field of engineering.

Important Note: This course provides a foundation for future eMETA courses on the application of Immersive Realities in specific fields of engineering.
